Intrinsic Safety

 

Obtaining Intrinsic Safety Certifications

Digi radio modems are used in products operating in hazardous environments. To ensure compliance, electronic equipment intended for use in areas with combustible gases often requires UL certification for hazardous locations.

Hazardous Location Ratings

  • Class 1, Division 1A (C1D1A): The most hazardous, such as environments with direct exposure to acetylene gas.
  • Class 1, Division 2 (C1D2): Less hazardous, like areas near an unleaded gasoline pump.

Certification Process

All electronic equipment used in these locations must be tested and certified by an independent lab. The lab evaluates schematics to confirm that even under failure conditions, the device will not generate sparks capable of igniting the atmosphere.

Alternative to Providing Schematics

If an OEM seeks certification for a product containing certain Digi modules, they can submit specific pre-approved documentation to the testing lab instead of a full schematic.
