Device connectivity problems, cannot resolve hostnames

If you're experiencing "cannot resolve hostname" errors on your device, it usually indicates a problem with your network's Domain Name System (DNS), which translates website names into IP addresses needed to access them; meaning your device can't find the correct address for the website you're trying to reach.

Troubleshooting steps:

Basic Checks:

  • Verify internet connection: Ensure your device is properly connected to the network and has a stable internet connection.
  • Check network settings: Double-check your network settings on the device, including the correct Wi-Fi network name and password.
  • Restart devices: Try restarting your device and router to refresh connections.

DNS-related checks:

  • Check DNS server settings:
    • Access your network settings and verify that the correct DNS server addresses are configured on your Digi product.
    • If unsure, contact your internet service provider (ISP) for the correct DNS servers.
  • Flush DNS cache:
    • On your device, clear the DNS cache to remove outdated information that might be causing issues.
    • Consult your device's manual for the specific command to flush DNS cache.
  • Use a different DNS server:
    • Try using a public DNS server like Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) to see if the issue persists.

Advanced troubleshooting:

  • Check for typos:

Double-check that you're typing the website address correctly, including any "www" prefixes.

  • Check local hosts file:
    • Examine your local "hosts" file on your computer, which can sometimes override DNS settings.
    • Verify that there are no incorrect entries that might be causing conflicts.
  • Check for network firewall issues:
    • Check if your network firewall is blocking access to the website you're trying to reach.
  • Contact your ISP:
    • If the problem persists, contact your ISP to check if there are any DNS issues on their end.

Diagnostic tools:

  • Ping command:
    • Use the "ping" command in your command prompt to test connectivity to a specific website by IP address.
  • Nslookup:
    • Use the "nslookup" command to check if your device can resolve a hostname to an IP address.
