Can I use a 3rd party interface board such as the Sparkfun Explorer or Adafruit's XBee Adapter with the XBee Cellular Modules?
No. The 3rd party boards are not designed to provide the nearly 1A of current that the XBee Cellular module requires to properly power up and make a connection. This also includes the little XBee Grove boards by Digi.
The board that is recommended for this product in development is the XBIB-U-CAP that comes in the XBee Cellular development kits.
