LAN port with IP passthrough
Goal
To set up a device attached to a specific LAN Ethernet port to receive the passthrough IP address of the Digi 6350-SR/6355-SR cellular modem connection.
Setup
This example assumes the LAN ports are operating under default settings, which provide DHCP connectivity to devices connected to the router's LAN port. For details on Digi 6350-SR/6355-SR default settings, see the Digi 6350-SR/6355-SR User Guide. For details using aView to configure the Digi 6350-SR/6355-SR, see aView User Guide.
For this example, you need:
- Firmware version 17.5.86 or higher
- LAN Ethernet port you want to connect your client device to so it receives the passthrough IP address
Sample
The following diagram shows a sample setup of a router with LAN port 4 set up to provide the IP address of the cellular modem connection as a passthrough to the client device connected to port 4. Client devices connected to LAN ports of the router or its Wi-Fi networks will receive a DHCP address in the 192.168.0.x/24 range from the router like normal.
IMPORTANT: The client device receiving the passthrough IP will only be able to use the router's cellular WAN connection. That is, if the router has a second WAN connection through its WAN Ethernet port, the client device with the passthrough IP will not be able to send traffic through the router's WAN Ethernet interface.
Sample configuration
Open the configuration profile for the router and make the following changes.
- Open Network > Interfaces > LAN
- Check Enabled.
- For Interface type, select IP Passthrough.
- If Device is set to a bridge:
- Click the Device drop-down.
- Select a specific LAN Ethernet port that the client device will be connected to in order to receive the passthrough IP.
When passthrough mode is enabled for an interface, it will only provide one DHCP IP address to the client device connected to that port. This means only one client device can be connected to the LAN port of the DAL device at a time, because it will only have one passthrough IP to provide at any given point.
- Select the interface(s) that will provide the IP address to the client device connected to the LAN port:
- Click to expand Source interfaces.
- Click Add.
- For Interface, select an appropriate interface.
Typically, this will be the Modem interface, but additional interfaces (such as the WAN interface) could be included.
- Repeat to add additional interfaces.
- Save and apply the new configuration settings to the device.
